With 3 years left to completely ban mercury, the UV LED market is on the line

With the improvement of the power of UV LED and the advancement of technology, the advantages of long life and small size have gradually replaced the lower power UV mercury lamp in the market.

After the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the international ban on mercury (mercury), was signed and passed in 2013, there are only three years left until 2020 when mercury is completely banned.

Including Japan, China, the European Union and many other markets, UV LEDs are needed to replace these ultraviolet mercury lamps in the household and industrial UV lamp fields, which has also accelerated the take-off of the UV LED market around the world.

At present, the ultraviolet mercury lamps used in the industry are generally used in the curing of various materials such as plastics, as well as in medical, water purification, air purification, printing and other essential applications in life and industry.

With years of development in the industry, UV LEDs have increased their power in recent years, and there has been considerable progress in UVA, UVB, UVC and other different wavelengths of ultraviolet light.

Taking the printing industry as an example, the UV mercury lamp in the printing press has a shorter lifespan than the UV LED module. Therefore, the new model has been changed to use a longer life UV LED module, which can reduce lamp replacement work, and perform ink curing. Reduce energy consumption, control of heat generation, etc.

In addition, including medical, water purification and other fields, appropriate UV LED modules have also been introduced and used. As for industrial high-wattage mercury ultraviolet lamps, the power of UV LEDs is still far behind this kind of products, and there is still a lot of room for development.

With the reshuffle of the general lighting field in 2016, the focus of major companies in 2017 began to shift to the subdivision field. It is estimated that the market output value of UVC LED sterilization and purification applications reached 28 million U.S. dollars in 2016, and it will reach 257 million U.S. dollars in 2021, with a compound annual growth rate of 56%.

In the first half of the year, LG Innotek announced the mass production of UV LED modules, which can perfectly sterilize the interior of the water purifier faucet. Let customers drink the water in the water purifier more assuredly.

Since the end of last month, LG Innotek Paju Sales Office has started mass production of "UV LED modules for sterilizing water purifier faucets." LG Electronics’ direct-drinking water purifier "PuriCare Slim Updown" new model product launched on the 27th, has installed this product module.

LG Innotek announced that it has developed the world's first 280nm UV-C LED with an ultraviolet power of 70mW. At the same time, it has an LED-related production system for epiwafers, chips, packages, modules, etc., and can supply products stably.

In addition to 280nm UV-C LEDs for sterilization, LG Innotek also secured an optimal product lineup for various applications such as 365nm, 385nm, 395nm, 405nm UV-A LEDs for general industry and 305nm UV-B LEDs for biomedical applications. .

At present, the power of UV LEDs on the market is not high enough. This is naturally limited by many technologies for producing UV LEDs. However, Nikkiso is already developing 50mW products in mass production, and the goal is to achieve 100mW UV LEDs.
